The catacombs of Rome, which had been the focus of historiography and piety since the end of the 16th century, opened up a view of an unknown iconographic world that was surprisingly difficult to interpret. In addition to the historical endeavor, the different interpretative approaches testify to the attempt to appropriate the early Christian monuments in a counter-reformation sense.
Prof. Dr. Ingo Herklotz, emer. Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Marburg, has published numerous books and essays on Italian art of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Another focus of his research is the history of the science and reception of early Christian and medieval monuments, which he pursues from the Renaissance to the 20th century.
