In order to justify its territorial claims, the British Crown declared Australia to be "Terra Nullius", an uninhabited no-man's land, at the end of the 18th century. In doing so, it ignored the countless Aboriginal nations as sovereign owners of the continent and initiated a policy of land seizure and oppression that continues in a modified form to this day.

Jan Bauer has studied the conditions in the Aboriginal settlement of Yuendumu in Central Australia in detail over many years. In addition to his graphic novel "Unter Rotem Staub" (avant 2023), he also created large-format acrylic and colored pencil studies. These views of deserted places now serve as motifs for postcards written by the inhabitants of the desert settlement.
