JOAR NANGO. KURT SCHWITTERS PREIS 2024 DER NIEDERSÄCHSISCHEN SPARKASSENSTIFTUNG

Joar Nango is awarded the KURT SCHWITTERS PRIZE 2024 by the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung. The prize is being awarded for the fourteenth time, is endowed with 30,000 euros and is linked to an exhibition at the Sprengel Museum Hannover.

Joar Nango, born in 1979 in Áltá, Norway, is a Sámi artist and architect. Sámi is the indigenous population of Sápmi, a cultural area that extends across Norway, Sweden, Finland and part of the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Joar Nango deals with questions of indigenous identity and explores the boundaries between architecture, design and the visual arts. He is a founding member of the architecture collective FFB. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, including documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens in 2017, the Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2019, the National Gallery of Canada in 2020 and the newly opened National Museum Oslo in 2022.

Joar Nango: "I am very honored to receive this prize and it means a lot to me that it is awarded in memory of Kurt Schwitters, an artist who was very important to me early on. Since my student days, his way of combining worlds and disciplines, reality and absurdity has served as a leitmotif for me. In my very first year as an art student, I developed a performance based on his famous "Ursonate" from 1932."

The KURT SCHWITTERS PRIZE 2024 DER NIEDERSÄCHSISCHE SPARKASSENSTIFTUNG will be awarded in fall 2024. The prize is awarded to artists "whose work is characterized by a reference to Kurt Schwitters and is characterized by venturing into new areas of artistic design and artistic ideas or whose work contributes to the connection and integration of artistic genres".
