Johanna Summer (piano), Jakob Manz (saxophone)

The duo of pianist Johanna Summer and saxophonist Jakob Manz is a rare stroke of luck in young German jazz: two of its outstanding characters, virtuosic, courageous, with broad horizons, an unmistakable signature and an understanding of jazz as a means of telling new, personal stories. Both are deeply rooted in the jazz idiom, but expand it with their own individual influences. For Johanna Summer, this is classical music in particular. With her free improvisations ranging from Bach to Ligeti, she regularly performs in major classical venues - solo and several times as a duo with Igor Levit. Jakob Manz, on the other hand, combines the melodic and rhythmic power of pop with the sensitivity of jazz in a captivating way - influenced by his deep admiration for pop-jazz border crossers such as David Sanborn or Marcus Miller and recently as a special guest of Sarah Connor on the country's biggest stages.
