The Wor(l)d Connects series, a collaboration between the Munich Department of Culture and producer Glammerlicious (58 Beats/Main Concept), presents the hip-hop news program "Journal Rappé" from Dakar live in Munich for the first time. Back in 2020, the two West African hip-hop protagonists Xuman and Keyti created ten episodes of rapped news for the Munich Biennale. However, due to the pandemic, they were only able to stream them at the time.
Xuman and Keyti see their satirical news rap as an independent counterweight to journalism. With quick volleys of words and sharp-tongued humor, they
humor, they make daily headlines street-compatible. The two even manage to pack 150 years of colonial history into a seven-minute video - authentically and without being artificial.
To kick off the evening, Xuman and Keyti perform their latest tracks before moving on to a live show by Journal Rappé.
Eleven years ago, the two Dakar MCs started presenting their rapped messages in Wolof, French and English on YouTube. Week after week, they generated more than 45,000 clicks. Eventually, a local TV station took notice of them. From then on, the perfect weekly flow was: "Bienvenue, installez-vous, on a des nouvelles pour vous" - "Welcome, settle down, we have news for you".
Xuman, who describes himself as a "street journalist", has been presenting a hip-hop radio show in his home country for years. It was in this context that Journal Rappé was born: the Dakar rap artist spontaneously came up with the idea of simply swapping roles with the news presenters.
Xuman has been associated with Munich and Wor(l)d Connects for over 10 years: Together with Kool Koc 6 from the crew PEE FROISS, he is featured on the sampler "Wor(l)d Connects Vol. 1" released by the Munich label 58 Beats in 2012 and has performed on stage with Main Concept several times.
His counterpart Keyti is one of the first and most renowned hardcore hip-hop artists in Senegal. In an interview with the online platform "Music in Africa", he explains: "We want to change the narrative of Africa, the way the rest of the world sees the continent."
Both came from the Senegalese protest movement "Y'en a marre" ("We're fed up"), which was founded in 2011 by rappers and journalists to stop the president's attacks on the constitution. The ousting of the regime at the time was a great success and the path from street demonstration to news channel was not a long one: "We see ourselves in a kind of referee role," explains Xuman. "No one is exempt from our criticism". Even religiously sensitive topics - such as Islamophobia - are not spared. Nevertheless, the two MCs have never had to apologize for a misstep: "We have a culture of politeness and inclusion," says Xuman. In the meantime, the two are often copied. With their support, a similar format was developed in Côte d'Ivoire in 2015 and Journal Rappé workshops were held in Mali, Cameroon, Uganda and even Jamaica.
In the run-up to the show, a new episode of rapped news will be created in collaboration with WASEEM, DSHAMILA aka ZiK and other actors from the Munich scene.
The focus is on topics that are affecting the world more than ever - from migration and flight to (neo)colonial thought patterns, (structural) racism and discrimination in its various forms. The freshly produced video will celebrate its premiere at the Milla Club.

With Dshamila aka ZiK (Munich), Mostafa (Cairo) and other guests, the Munich MC, DJ, producer, poet, organizer and activist, who has already shared the stage with the likes of M1 of dead prez, R.A. The Rugged Man and Sadat X, will present his new EP "New Family". Like Journal Rappé, this international music project with various feature artists from Africa aims to empower BIPoC communities and contribute to social change as the "Voice of the Voiceless".
