Katharina Sieverding

In the organizer's words:

The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is honoring the work of the internationally renowned Düsseldorf-based photography pioneer Katharina Sieverding (*1941 in Prague) with a major survey exhibition. The multi-award-winning artist became famous for her iconic close-ups of her face and her large-scale photographs, which she was one of the first to introduce to art in the mid-1970s.

Coming from a formative theater degree, she records, dissects and diagnoses historical and current issues and social wounds, makes gender boundaries fluid and questions the power and abuse of images. With her monumental works, which can be classified as performance, body art and experimental film, she has added a new dimension to photography. To this day, Katharina Sieverding takes a political stance with her works: on National Socialism and the question of German identity against the backdrop of anti-democratic forces, but also on global issues. In her works, she deals with the causes and consequences of wars and their complex constellations of power and violence, but also with the destructive exploitation of planet earth by mankind. Even if her works make direct reference to current events, they nevertheless appear timelessly contemporary.

At K21, in addition to the central works from the artist's almost 60-year creative process, her extensive archive will also be included in the show for the first time as an open space for discourse.

The exhibition "Katharina Sieverding" is made possible by NATIONAL-BANK AG and is supported by Kunststiftung NRW, LVR, Ströer, got2b, Leap Society and the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
