KHM graduate Katharina Pethke's first feature-length film after graduating from KHM, "Reproduction", premiered at this year's Berlinale in the "Forum" section. The essay film examines three generations in the field of tension between social determination and artistic ambition, stubbornness and motherhood, production and reproduction. When Katharina Pethke became a professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts after completing her studies at the KHM, this set a process of reflection and research in motion. Not only had she studied there herself (undergraduate studies), but also her mother and grandmother.
"Reproduktion" , 2024, 111 min., documentary by Katharina Pethke, German with English subtitles | 2.39:1 | color & b/w
Who is allowed to show what? And who is being looked at? "Reproduction" uses three generations of women to explore the ideal images that women are confronted with in art: The larger-than-life male genius on the wall - and the selflessly loving mother carved in stone. Does the one ideal exclude the other ideal? Like a tableau and in concentrated movements, the film describes power, class and gender relations across three generations of women, tells of discarded drawings and unfinished careers: The assumptions and demands of the respective roles reproduce themselves in different ways - right up to their disappearance in care work. In the process, something becomes visible of the exclusion criteria of the institutions, of the power system of an art academy and its spaces. "Reproduction" is an architectural journey through time, on the trail of stories that have disappeared. Stories of female artists.
