Rose Gooding (played by Jessie Buckley) and Edith Swan (played by Olivia Coleman) have nothing more in common than their hometown, the tranquil seaside town of Littlehampton in the south of England. Rose bubbles over with joie de vivre, while the conservative Edith lives in constant fear of God. That's why she immediately suspects the lively Rose when several residents of Littlehampton suddenly receive provocative letters in an offensive tone and with brazen accusations for some initially unknown reason. Even the Scotland Yard investigators who are called in have Rose under suspicion. Her world threatens to collapse as her custody of her daughter is suddenly called into question. Meanwhile, the flood of strange letters just won't stop. Policewoman Gladys Moss (played by Anjana Vasan) therefore wants to take a closer look and comes to the conclusion that Rose may not be behind the letters at all...
