The "Cosmic Cinema" event series at the ESO Supernova continues with the topic "Cosmic Void".

When we look at the sky with modern telescopes, we are struck by the vast number of stars and galaxies. Cosmologists study the distribution of these objects in order to learn more about our universe. However, the vast majority of the universe consists of dark and almost empty regions. What do they tell us about the cosmos?

Our universe has been expanding ever since the Big Bang. Under the influence of gravity, the first stars and galaxies were formed early on, which over time merged into ever larger structures. In combination with the expansion of the universe, this created a net-like structure of matter. Which are the largest structures in this cosmic web?

Computer simulations help us to better understand the development of the dark and empty part of the universe. Modern measurements require precise models and new knowledge about the empty regions in space can help to improve these models. What properties make these regions so special for research? And what can we learn about our universe from the void?

In this Cosmic Cinema, Nico Schuster from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) takes you on a journey into the emptiness of the universe. He will give an overview of the largest structures in the universe and their special significance for today's research.

The Cosmic Cinema lecture series is a cooperation between the ESO and the ORIGINS Cluster of Excellence and presents current research topics. The ORIGINS Cluster of Excellence combines astrophysics, particle physics and biophysics to investigate the origin of the universe and the origin of life.
