Cora Tilling arrives at Ascot racecourse on Ladies Day for her first visit to her great-uncle, Lord Manor. The wealthy lord has a hot favorite at the start of the Gold Cup: "Satan" is the name of the unruly wonder horse who - if the bookies' rumors are to be believed - is ridden by the devil himself. And Satan soon lives up to his name: during training he throws his jockey off and he dies. Was it really just an accident?

But that's not all: when a murder also takes place, Cora finds herself in mortal danger and unexpectedly becomes the prime suspect. In her distress, she calls Richard Bourke, her stepmother's long-term fiancé. Will the former chief inspector of Scotland Yard succeed in catching the culprit before it is too late for Cora?
