Cora Tilling arrives at Ascot Racecourse on Ladies Day for her first visit to her uncle Adrian Tilling, the Laird of Mant Manor. The wealthy Scottish lord brings his hot favorite to the start of the Gold Cup: "Satan" is the name of the unruly wonder horse who - if the bookmakers' rumors are to be believed - is ridden by the devil himself. And Satan soon lives up to his name: during training he throws his jockey off and he dies. Was it really just an accident?

But that's not all: when a murder also takes place, Cora finds herself in mortal danger and unexpectedly becomes the prime suspect. In her distress, she calls Richard Bourke, her stepmother's long-term fiancé. Will the former chief inspector of Scotland Yard succeed in catching the culprit before it is too late for Cora? Nobody trusts a racehorse to do anything bad... Or is there a curse on Satan, also known as the "devil of the racecourse"?
