Kris Davis is a Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer who has been described by the New York Times as leading the way in "deciding where to hear jazz [in New York] on any given night." Davis has released 25 recordings as leader or co-leader and has collaborated with artists such as Dave Holland, Terri Lyne Carrington, John Zorn, Craig Taborn, Ingrid Laubrock, Julian Lage, Tyshawn Sorey and Esperanza Spalding. Alongside Wayne Shorter and Danilo Perez, she was named a 2021 Doris Duke Artist, 2020 and 2022 Pianist of the Year by DownBeat magazine, and 2021 Pianist and Composer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. Davis is the Associate Program Director for Creative Development at the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and founder of the label Pyroclastic Records.

Run the Gauntlet, the new album by Kris Davis, is accompanied by bassist Robert Hurst (Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, Geri Allen) and drummer Johnathan Blake (Kenny Barron, Dave Holland, Tom Harrell). The album skillfully combines structured compositions with spontaneous improvisations and underlines Davis' unique position in the world of jazz as a leader who combines various talents.

The title "Run the Gauntlet" is a metaphor for overcoming a series of challenges to achieve his goals. With this project, Davis pays tribute to six pioneering female pianists who have had a lasting impact on her path as a pianist and composer: Geri Allen, Carla Bley, Renee Rosnes, Angelica Sanchez, Marilyn Crispell and Sylvie Courvoisier. In dedicating the album to these extraordinary women, Davis honors their resilience and groundbreaking contributions as leaders in the jazz community.
