Short film in the Veedel: There's a system to it

A strong civil society is committed to combating anti-democratic tendencies, standing up for human rights and filling gaps in government action. In our short film program "Das hat System", we look at the activist side of civil society, but also want to focus on the representatives of state power.

From the feminist freedom struggle of Iranians in March 1979, we look at current forms of resistance against the regime in social networks. In Hungary, we observe how nationalist indoctrination is negotiated to an extreme over a cake, while a fictitious Dutch village draws lots for the annual human sacrifice in the face of the climate crisis.

Kurzfilm im Veedel also brings short films to the big screen outside the inner-city hot spots. The "Kurzfilm im Veedel" event series shows short film programs across genres and genres on current topics and controversial issues, with the aim of making short film tangible and visible to as many people as possible. Despite its artistic density and social relevance, short film has little presence in the commercial cinema landscape. We want to draw more attention to short film and the filmmakers of this genre, train critical viewing within the framework of entertaining short film programs and create feature-length entertainment for as wide an audience as possible. In doing so, we want to try to establish a local connection to the short film programs in the Veedel and create a space for exchange between filmmakers, audience and locally committed actors from the Veedel in the subsequent film discussion.

Pannónia Dicsérete (DE, Borbála Nagy, 2020, 27')
In the midst of the confusion caused by the Prime Minister's visit to an ordinary school in Hungary, schoolgirl Márti is confronted with a moral dilemma.

Moddergat (DE, Job Antoni, 2023, 26')
Dawn breaks in the year 2039 in Moddergat, a small coastal village in the Netherlands. The four-member delegation of the international climate tribunal has little time to prepare the human sacrifice that will avert the dangers of climate change. But as the tide rises and the world watches, the victim wonders: is it worth dying?

Behind the term "sensitive content", behind this symbol of crossed-out eyes, in this deep blur, two real eyes have been wiped out by the violence in the Middle East.

NA ŻYWO (PL, Mara Tamkovich, 2023, 13)
While the state forces violently crack down on protesters on the streets of Minsk, two journalists report live from the kitchen of a private apartment. But time seems to be working against them.
