"La Cage aux Folles is a nightclub with a difference, run by Georges and his partner Albin, who performs here as the travesty star Zaza. Jean-Michel, George's son, has fallen in love - with Anne, the daughter of a right-wing, homophobic politician. - Because of the planned marriage, a meeting between the two "normal" families is arranged at short notice. Jean-Michel's biological mother also wants to come to this meeting, but then cancels at short notice, whereupon Albin quickly transforms into the aforementioned "mother" and takes on this role with surprising severity. At first, everything goes well, but Albin's "mother" is Zaza. And so the events of the evening increasingly escalate...
Jean Poiret's play La Cage aux Folles premiered in Paris in 1973. It landed on theater stages around the world and was filmed in 1978 under the direction of Édouard Molinaros as A Cage Full of Fools.
In 1983, Jerry Herman (music) and Harvey Fierstein (book) developed the theater version into a musical for Broadway. Since then, La Cage aux Folles has (sooner or later) been a permanent fixture on every musical stage!
