We are delighted to welcome Behzad Karim Khani(@behzad.karim.khani) to our next reading in cooperation with Odeon Kino on October 9, 2024.
After his highly acclaimed debut novel HUND, WOLF, SCHAKAL, for which he received the Harbour Front Literature Festival Prize and the Debut Prize of the Buddenbrookhaus 2024, his next promising novel ALS WIR SCHWÄNE WAREN now follows.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
A boy who longs for a violence that leaves a hollow with the outline of Germany. He lives in a housing estate where the kitchens have no hoods and the corridors smell of poverty, marjoram and bunk beds. It is the 1990s and he has fled with his family from Iran to the Ruhr region. His mother is a sociologist, his father a writer whose language has fifteen different terms for pride. He experiences Germany as an affront and becomes an observer. He exhausts himself trying to understand the country, while his mother believes in getting on and getting ahead and his son's anger becomes increasingly unchecked. For there is violence on the streets of his neighborhood, of which the parents have little knowledge.
A novel about a bleak country. About the diaspora as a home. About freedom in being a stranger. About broken elevators and the truth of swans.
