Saša Stanišić presents his new novel: "If the widow wants to be addressed, she places the watering can on the grave with the spout facing forward"

What if you hadn't made this one decision, but that other one? What if you had defied expectation? And then there is still the fear of having been a coward and having missed out on something, a better self, greater happiness, funnier pets and partners.

In his latest collection of stories, Saša Stanišic devotes himself to the constant brooding at the crossroads of our biography and tells stories in which it is still possible to make the other unusual choice or to tell a good lie. Like the cleaner who decides, with a goat hair brush in her hand, to finally take life into her own hands. Just like the father who is prepared to cheat in order to finally win against his eight-year-old son in Memory. And like the German-Bosnian writer who travels to Heligoland for the first time only to realize in a dimly lit restaurant that he has been to Heligoland before.

Saša Stanišić ("Herkunft", "Vor dem Fest") was born in Višegrad (Yugoslavia) in 1978 and has lived in Germany since 1992. His stories and novels have been translated into over 40 languages and have received numerous awards. Saša Stanišić lives and works in Hamburg. He is a soccer coach for an F-youth team there.
