Lights against the right: Together for democracy and artistic freedom!

On Saturday, September 21, we are calling on everyone in Bremen to gather in the Wallanlagen around the Kunsthalle from 20:00. With "Lights against the right", we are taking a stand against the rise of right-wing extremist parties in Germany and showing solidarity with the federal states of Saxony, Brandenburg and Thuringia, where important state elections are taking place. With this action, we want to draw attention to the threat to the cultural and art scenes that are endangered by right-wing extremist and right-wing populist forces throughout Germany.

What is planned? The event consists of four important parts:

1. Artistic projections: The rear façade of the Kunsthalle will become a canvas for an art installation. Bremen artists will create live projections of their confrontation with the rise of right-wing forces in Germany. These artworks will be projected as animated illustrations with the help of Urbanscreen to open up a lively dialog about the threat to artistic freedom.
2. Readings of solidarity letters: On stage, people from Bremen will read out letters and comments from art and cultural institutions in Saxony, Brandenburg and Thuringia. These testimonies describe the devastating effects that the rise of the AfD and political pressure has had on their work.
3. Fundraising campaign: During the event, donations will be collected for the institutions whose letters will be read out. With the donations, we want to support these places of culture and art in their work and show solidarity.
4. Bringing light into the darkness: Fascism works through the illusion of consensus - the silence or looking away. But we want to look and therefore invite all Bremen residents to actively bring hope into the darkness. We are calling on everyone in Bremen to come to the Wallanlagen with an (electric) light and form a large sea of lights for an open, diverse and democratic society.

Why is this important? With the rise of far-right and right-wing populist forces, artistic freedom as an important pillar of our democratic society is also coming under threat. In many parts of Germany, cultural venues are already experiencing right-wing attacks and threats. The electoral success of the AfD and other far-right parties could intensify these attacks and lead to the systematic restriction of art and culture.

If we do not want our cultural landscape to be dominated by right-wing ideologies, we must take action now. "Lights against the right" is our contribution to standing up together for artistic freedom and taking a stand against the threat posed by right-wing politics. Together, we are calling for greater support for cultural and remembrance work throughout Germany.

Let's send a strong signal on September 21: For art, culture and democracy!
