Julia von Heinz and Michaela Krützen, both professors at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF), present the non-fiction book "ZEITVERSCHWENDUNG Gammeln, Warten, Driften in Film und Literatur". The latest work by HFF media studies professor Michaela Krützen was published in August by S. Fischer Verlag and takes us on a search for answers in film and literature: "What is a waste of time?" and: "Does anyone who waits or bums around, streams or drifts waste their life?". In conversation with HFF directing professor Julia von Heinz, the chosen topic and the writing process will be discussed - and there will also be excerpts from the book and the films mentioned in it.
What is a waste of time? Are people wasting their lives waiting or bumming around, streaming or drifting? Michaela Krützen explores these questions by looking at famous figures from literature and film: Jeff Lebowski at the bowling alley, Hans Castorp in his spa clinic or Marie Antoinette at the French court. She looks at Ilya Oblomov lying on his sofa and Betty Draper, who is married in the suburbs. What do we learn about the use of time from books, films and series such as Federico Fellini's "The Idlers", Frank Capra's "Life Artists", F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby", Bret Easton Ellis' "American Psycho" or Jean-Philippe Toussaint's novel "Television"? By examining these and other works and placing them in completely new theoretical contexts, Michaela Krützen enlightens us about one of life's central questions in an entertaining way and with an eye for detail.
Michaela Krützen, born in Aachen in 1964, has been Professor of Media Studies at the University of Television and Film in Munich since 2001. Her most recent books published by Fischer Verlag are "Klassik, Moderne, Nachmoderne. Eine Filmgeschichte" (2015), "Dramaturgies of Film. Das etwas andere Hollywood" (2010), "Väter, Engel, Kannibalen. Figures of Hollywood Cinema" (2007), "What is Pop?" (ed., 2004) and "Dramaturgie des Films. How Hollywood tells stories" (2003).
