François Truffaut's last film is rich in set pieces and declarations of love for crime cinema and film noir. Truffaut pays tribute to his role models such as Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks with a fast pace and great wit. [French original language]

The distinctive secretary Barbara Becker (Fanny Ardant) works in the office of real estate agent Julien Vercel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), where she often manages the business on her own while her boss is out duck hunting. One day she is unceremoniously fired after Julien's wife Marie-Christin (Caroline Sihol) complains about alleged insults. But then Julien comes under suspicion of murder when first his wife's lover and then she herself are found dead. Barbara is the only one who is firmly convinced of Julien's innocence and takes the investigation into her own hands ...
For the screenplay, Truffaut adapted the novel The Long Saturday Night by Charles Williams with the help of his long-time companions Suzanne Schiffman and Jean Aurel. On Love and Death is also the ninth collaboration with cinematographer Néstor Almendros, who immerses the story in stylish black and white images.
