In the LIT.retro series at the LITFILMS Literatur Film Festival Münster at the Schloßtheater: The adaptation of Ray Bradbury's novel of the same name was François Truffaut's first color film and his only English-language production. Oskar Werner is convincing in the role of fireman Montag, who discovers his love for the books he is supposed to burn. [English OVR]

Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper ignites. Fireman Montag (Oskar Werner) knows this number well, because at some point in the future it will be illegal to own or read books. The fire department's job is therefore to track down and burn any remaining books. Their stubborn owners are handed over to the police. One day Montag falls in love with the beautiful Clarisse (Julie Christie), but she is also one of the remaining book collectors. Julie Christie plays a double role alongside Oskar Werner: as Montag's moronic wife Linda and as Clarisse, who initiates Montag's purification. Later director Nicolas Roeg (WHEN THE GONDOLES Mourn) was responsible for the extraordinary camera work.
