Jenobi - Irregulatrity

Almost four years after her debut Patterns, Jenobi is releasing her second album in May 2024. The Gothenburg-born artist Jenny Apelmo Mattsson invented her artist alias in 2020 in order to be able to create her own music in a self-determined and uncompromising way. Jenobi has since become a sacred oasis for the Swede, where her creativity can flow unhindered.

This is precisely the place where "Irregularity" was created. The Hamburg-based musician locked herself away in her studio for six months and created 11 new songs, which she not only wrote herself, but also recorded and produced independently. No problem for the multi-instrumentalist, for whom it has always been important to create the Jenobi sound individually and independently, thereby strengthening its uniqueness.

The mystical Scandinavian melancholy already familiar from Patterns now meets striking beats which, together with the characteristically delicate voice, open up a whole new dimension. Unusual electronic elements are sometimes reminiscent of Björk and The Knife, while self-confident spoken word vocals set to laid-back basslines create an attitude that we find in artists such as Rosalia and Noga Erez.

Irregularity not only stands for musical innovation, but also delivers a strong message that Apelmo Mattsson now wants to carry out into the world from her oasis. Her 13 years of experience as a musician have been marked by many downturns and challenges, and she has always had to assert herself in a male-dominated industry. But while Patterns deals with destructive patterns of behavior, the new songs tell of a newly acquired state of consciousness and strength. After the sadness comes the anger - this is reflected in lyrics peppered with clever, ironic humor that leave a bittersweet feeling that is instantly addictive. This is how Apelmo Mattsson succeeds in criticizing patriarchal structures with a self-confident smile.
