Lyschko are three people from a medium-sized city in North Rhine-Westphalia whose frustration is released in concentrated musical force. Brutal pop music torn from the dark heart of youthful fear in the face of the state of the world; but at the same time music that recognizes the circumstances as made and changeable and seeks to overcome them in a utopian way; music, finally, that draws great dreams from its own insecurity.
A two-week support tour with Mia Morgan was followed by shows as support acts for Messer, Love A and Drangsal, who has never tired of promoting Lyschko for months and also lends his voice to the hit single "Fremd" in an inimitable way. As a result, even the major streaming providers, who are stingy with newcomer support, rolled out the red carpet for Lyschko early on with high-paying playlist placements. The first single release "Hysterie + Abfall" immediately graced a Spotify cover ("Fresh Finds"). "Fremd" and "Abend" landed in "New Musik Friday", the mother of all Spotify playlists, which bands, labels and managements are licking their fingers for. Music media such as Diffus and Musikexpress joined in the jubilation, presenting the music videos to date to the highest critical acclaim, awarding five stars to "Brennen" and also receiving support from other bands, including Kraftklub in their "Radio mit K".
Since 2018, Lyschko have been setting annoyance, attitude and outcry to music in a bittersweet melange of post-punk, new wave and finely selected essentials of dark pop. In the bosom of NNDW (Neue Neue Deutsche Welle - a term coined by Lyschko himself even before acts like Edwin Rosen were carried by him), the young trio triumphs with bravura and meticulously seeks close contact with (post-)punk in the style of Die Nerven, Culk or Messer and international genre greats such as Fontaines DC, Iceage or Just Mustard.
With their 2019 debut EP "Stunde Null" and the accompanying underground hit "Der Gang vor die Hunde", Lyschko cemented the cornerstone between cynical angriness, melancholy and brutal pop.
Now the newcomer band of the moment is releasing their debut album. "Brennen" takes listeners on a journey through crystal-clear metaphors and Lyschko's appealing sound concept. The three-piece presents itself less in a riotous manner, but rather in a hook-slapping retromania including post-punk thunderstorms and Lina Holzrichter's melancholic yet full vocal volume. The fact that the band lyrically and tonally
The fact that the band has taken a lyrical and tonal leap towards the top of NNDW is evident in every aspect of the 50-minute album. On "Brennen", Lyschko prove more clearly than ever that they have staying power without falling into repetitive patterns. The majority of the tracks on the album were created during the various lockdown phases since 2020. Other songs originated from old demo recordings that the young musicians have been working on independently since 2018. The songs are intertwined in a precise yet varied way: "Fremd" and "Zurück (Zu Dir)" beckon with reminiscences and anthemic violence, "Ohnmacht" symbolizes the musical loss of control and flirts with screams and noise-rock nuances, while partially post-rock-soaked guitar lines on the melodious basic mood and staccato-animated drums lead into the ecstasy of "Abend" and finally the album-closer and title track leaves the listener in an atmospheric trance.
Since Lyschko book their concerts themselves with a great DIY ethos and have been organizing concerts at Waldmeister Solingen for years, thus constantly networking and recommending themselves to others, the band took advantage of every possible performance opportunity even in the concert-poor Corona period. Many of the "Brennen" songs were given the final polish and the now so impressive arrangement. The number of guest musicians involved is also impressive and shows that Lyschko were considered an important part of the German indie scene even before the release of their debut album. In addition to the aforementioned friends of the band Max Gruber (Drangsal), Mia Morgan and badison, indie greats such as Sam Vance-Law, Paul Pötsch (Trümmer), Search Yiu and Oliver Heinrich (also Drangsal) are also guests on various songs.
"Brennen" was produced by Tobias Siebert (Phillip Boa, Slut, Juli, Klez.e, and many more) at Radio Buellebrueck Studio in Berlin, who was presented with Lyschko's first self-painted demo CD at one of his Klez.e concerts back in 2016 and responded with detailed and affectionate feedback. Singer Lina Holzrichter: "The feedback was first and foremost: 'Forget the rock and allow more real emotion'. Since then, we've stayed in touch until we decided to make our debut album together after our concert at Pop Kultur Nachwuchs in 2019. Toby understood exactly who we are, what we do and what we want to do for our sense of music from the very beginning and mapped it very accurately."
Lyschko are no longer only driven by the questions of adolescence and late adolescent excesses, but rather distance themselves from objectless demo slogans and move with an intuitive melancholic lightness towards finely tuned lyrics and cleverly placed antitheses from the perspective of a young, eloquent woman. All this not only stirs up dust, it gives German-language guitar music a bright new coat of paint that will stay and certainly not peel off any time soon.
"Lyschko's flaming glamorous sound makes me want to have my youth back and experience things like having the initials of the band members tattooed on a normally strictly concealed area on a boozy summer night...
