Every year, the Fantasy Filmfest highlights a small selection of feature films in the program. In addition to the classic slots such as the opening film, which kicks off the festival, and the closing film, which is shown as the last film, the Centerpiece forms the so-called heart of the program. Furthermore, the Director's Spotlight focuses on the work of one director in particular. The Special Slots of the 38th Fantasy Filmfest are SPEAK NO EVIL (opening film), MALDOROR ( Centerpiece), PÁRVULOS ( Director's Spotlight for Isaac Ezban) and TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS; WALLED IN (closing film)

Maldoror

Belgium, mid-1990s: Two girls disappear in broad daylight. The search for them fills the headlines for a long time, but yields no results. The idealistic young investigator Paul Chartier becomes part of an undercover special unit that spends weeks tailing the convicted sex offender Marcel Dedieu. But bureaucracy and overwork lead to the end of Operation Maldoror, despite incriminating evidence. Paul cannot and will not accept this and continues to work tirelessly on his own to convict Dedieu. In the process, the policeman becomes increasingly obsessed with his own idea of justice - and runs the risk of losing not only his young family, but also himself for good ...

Fabrice du Welz, already one of the greats of sophisticated European genre cinema since CALVAIRE and VINYAN, takes on the true story of the notorious Belgian serial killer Marc Dutroux in his new film MALDOROR. Supported by the outstanding acting performance of Anthony Bajon, who dominates every minute with absolute presence, du Welz stages a raw and epic true crime bastard to a menacingly pulsating soundtrack. In a perfectly bleak 1990s look, violence happens because no one wants to look, and justice only counts as much as the man dishing it out. Uncomfortable master cinema at its very best!
