Malstrom

In the organizer's words:

It becomes loud, it becomes poetic, it becomes humorous. Malstrom creates a musical river that sweeps away everything that stands on its banks and then absorbs it. The spirit of improvisation is combined with the brute force of avant-garde rock or even Krautrock from the best of times. In this sense, the music is a wild and cheerful mixture, similar to the jazz forms of the New York downtown scene. After all, saxophonist Florian Walter is a bit like John Zorn, guitarist Axel Zajac is not unlike Marc Ribot and drummer Jo Beyer is not too far removed from Jim Black.

The band was founded in 2010. On four albums, Malstrom have created avant-garde music that works directly - without any theoretical superstructure or meta-level - and is extremely playful. With great playful precision, both in the composed and improvised fragments, they open up new possibilities for the music.

The band name reflects the musical message:

"A whirlpool disappearing into an extinct underground giant volcano. It is an eternal interplay between the plunge into the infinite depths of the meres and the allure of the risk of enjoying the danger at the edge of the vortex. In any case, there is no such thing as safety. Fish and other sea creatures instinctively avoid the vicinity of the whirlpool, while humans repeatedly fall victim to their unbridled curiosity and venture too close.

The music of Malstrom has been described by the press as a mixture of progressive rock à la Dream Theatre and the intricate jazz of Steve Coleman with the expressiveness of John Zorn.
