Ria doesn't have it easy: she lives with her elderly grandmother, has a miserable and poorly paid job, her mother has passed away and she is also unsure who the father of her unborn child is. Nevertheless, Ria remains curious, stands up for herself and avoids the prejudices about her origins.

With "Maria", the English social dramatist Simon Stephens has created a powerful portrait of a woman in the 21st century that shows that tenderness and self-determination are possible even in a cold world. The songs specially composed for the play by drama musician Vera Mohrs emphasize Maria's resilience. Director David Bösch, who is known for his psychologically sophisticated characterization, presents his talent to the Nuremberg theatre audience with this production.
