Freely adapted from Friedrich Schiller | Adapted for high school by Juli Mahid Carly
Ever since the Scottish exchange student Mariah arrived at Friedrich-Schiller-Swift-Gymnasium, nothing has been the same. Elisadieerste, musical star, math Olympian and daughter of the principal, was the undisputed number one until now. With her girls Lorde Läster and Wilhelmina Cecil Duke von und zu Bully, she controlled the whole campus. But now Mariah attracts everyone's attention, her tartan skirt style is copied, she shines in the musical club and is a force to be reckoned with in the soccer team. It's not just Mortimer Quarterbeck, naive as a golden retriever, who falls for her. Mariah is edgy and brings something new to the school. And Elisadieerste won't stand for it. There can only be one.
Today, Schiller's drama about queens reads like a plot for a Netflix series. But what does this battle between two women for the English crown have to do with the Saxon upper school? With this question in mind, Juli Mahid Carly takes Schiller's text and relocates it to a high school setting. The adaptation not only brings the classic into the present day, but also takes a contemporary look at two teenagers fighting against a patriarchal world order. Only unlike Schiller, they have the chance to unite against it.
