Material und Grenzen

When Michelangelo was asked how he managed to create the monumental David, he replied: "The David was always already there. I just had to remove the superfluous marble around him."

But what if you reverse this idea of imposing a form on a material? What if you explore the material's inherent limits and allow the material and its limits to determine the final form?

The exhibition "Material and Limits" presents four artistic positions of the sculpture class under the direction of Prof. Dr. Bärbel Schlüter, which deal with the tension between materiality and limitation in a variety of ways. The students explore how materials not only set physical boundaries, but also shape and challenge artistic creation, as well as how we as visitors interact with the theme of boundaries.

The exhibition is curated by Alexej Eisner, also a former sculpture student at the UOS.

Works by Azim F. Becker, J Gerstenkorn, Zoé Pehlke and Clara Uhlemann will be on display.

With this exhibition, the skulptur-galerie offers young artists who have already developed a position the opportunity to present themselves to a wider audience and to present the diversity of positions and modes of expression in a multifaceted dialog. The exhibition invites visitors to consider materiality not only as the technical basis of sculpture, but also as a meaningful medium that sets boundaries, transcends them and at the same time creates new spaces.

The exhibition is accompanied by a free art education program that addresses the themes of materiality and boundaries.
