In the organizer's words:

ROTUNDA PROJECT 2023/24

The up-and-coming architects from Matri-Archi(tecture) bring their own and other people's experiences of life in the diaspora to the Pinakothek der Moderne. They focus on the construction of belonging far from home and the question of identity.

For the installation "Homeplace", Matri-Archi(tecture) designs the rotunda as a place for critical reflection on the spatial expression of living and home with assemblages of textiles, sound and narratives.

The exhibition is divided into three parts: An expansive curtain of beads stretches from the dome to the first floor of the rotunda, creating an atmosphere that is both transparent and intimate. The installation is complemented by a soundscape based on a series of voices from the diaspora, exploring ideas of dwelling and home. Matri-Archi(tecture) opens and expands "Homeplace" with an Imbizo (Zulu: gathering) that activates the installation during the vernissage.

Matri-Archi(tecture) is an association comprising a network of interdisciplinary spatial practitioners dedicated to the development of African spatial education and providing a venue for artistic collaboration through design, art and architectural research projects. As a constellation of multidisciplinary spatial practitioners, Matri-Archi(tecture) recognizes the value of collaboration across multiple worlds and worldviews, working together in various African and European cities.

Matri-Archi(tecture) has exhibited at the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein (2021), the Chicago Architecture Biennale (2021) and Nairobi Design Week (2019), among others. The association won the "Best New Practices" award (2021) of the architecture platform Archdaily and was highlighted in the architecture magazine Arch+ for contemporary outstanding feminist spatial practice (2022).
