MENTAL MIRRORS
Mental health has not only reached the music scene as a buzzword, but is a real topic for the future: in a society that has to cope with ever faster processes of change, mental well-being is of enormous importance for individuals and society. However, Mental Mirrors opens up an artistic perspective on the subject: works will be performed that have emerged from the experience of mental crises. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 was composed at a time when the composer was in a state of deep depression due to his hearing loss. It will be performed by the up-and-coming British pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc by African-American composer Julius Eastman and These Worlds In Us by Missy Mazzoli both revolve around the theme of the isolated outsider: Eastman provoked as a black, queer composer, singer and performer himself in the avant-garde New York of the 1970s, Mazzoli tells of the trauma of soldiers who no longer find a place in society after returning from the war. The three works are commented on and linked together by rapper Leila Akinyi with fresh vibes - loud, direct, fearless.
