TALES & TONGUES
Stuttgart-based jazz artist and singer Miriam Ast released her second album Tales & Tongues on Unit Records in May 2023.
It is "a successful, unique modern jazz concept album [...]" (Empire Music), with which the singer deals with a complex topic. During her seven years in London, she experienced the diversity of cultures at first hand and felt very close to the people. The nationalist developments surrounding Brexit and the deep divisions in the country affected her all the more. From this, she developed the idea for a concept album in which she advocates cultural diversity and openness.
Ast has reworked European folk songs in jazz garb and in an unusual instrumentation for voice, piano and cello, making it much more than just a jazz album. She musically condenses the moods of the songs and creates new worlds of sound. "Ast has presented very courageous arrangements [...] (and) manages the feat of sounding authentic both as an interpreter of folk music and as a jazz singer." (Jazzpodium). She sings in seven different national languages, hence the title 'Tales & Tongues.

With this theme, Ast has hit a nerve of our time. In Germany, thousands of people have been taking to the streets for weeks in support of cultural diversity, openness and democracy. The Miriam Ast Trio's well-received concerts at the BIX Jazz Club in Stuttgart and the Haus der Kulturen in Landau in January and February 2024 have shown that the artist connects people with this topic and inspires her audience with her expressive singing.

"Nothing but love" is the title of the article by journalist Gereon Hoffmann following the trio's performance in Landau, calling it a musical "great moment". He describes how "the songs and languages conveyed" are both "touching and impressive" - "even for listeners who don't have much jazz experience but appreciate musical depth."

The well-known jazz blog Jazz Fun.de voted the album one of the best albums of 2023 and Jazzpodium also included it on its list of the best albums of 2023.

Miriam Ast has now been selected to perform with her trio at the "Baden-Württemberg Clubnight" as part of jazzahead! 2024 at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel, representing her federal state. Miriam Ast will be represented by Marita Goga music arts coneception, which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year.
