We live in a racist society, so children inevitably come into contact with racist statements. Your first gut feeling is not always the best guide when dealing with this. However, both children and adults can learn how to deal with racist incidents - and above all how to recognize racism. Because racism manifests itself in many different ways among children and in the school environment. It is not always crude insults that are the problem. It is often supposedly minor things that nevertheless leave a lifelong mark on those affected.

Together with Pia Amofa-Antwi, author Saskia Hödl has written the children's non-fiction book"Steck mal in meiner Haut"("Be in my skin") about anti-racism and empowerment, which is now a Spiegel bestseller. It deals with many of these supposed little things, which the authors can also remember from their own school days.

In this workshop with Saskia Hödl, we will use the book to reflect on what racism is, how it was learned and how it can be unlearned. We will talk about how racist structures can manifest themselves in the context of school and what empowerment means for affected children. Together, we will use examples to develop ways to deal with racism in everyday school life as safely as possible.

Saskia Hödl, born in Vienna in 1985, is a journalist and author. She studied journalism and media management in Vienna before joining taz in Berlin in 2013. There she first worked as a trainee, then as an editor. She was also Berlin correspondent for the Wiener Zeitung before taking over as head of the society section "taz zwei & Medien" at the beginning of 2019. She has been working as a freelance journalist since summer 2022 and lives in Vienna. She writes about politics, society, culture and media. Her column "Kinderspiel" appears in the taz every two weeks. In April 2022, she co-authored the children's non-fiction book "Steck mal in meiner Haut" about anti-racism and empowerment, published by EMF Verlag.
