My Private Jesus - by Lea Ruckpaul based on an idea by Eike Weinreich - Premiere on May 27, 2023 - Schauspielhaus, Kleines Haus - Schauspiel
"My Private Jesus" starts from a highly arguable thesis: Everyone has the right to take their own life. Young Pi - named after the circle number that goes to infinity - announces her impending suicide. Friends and family are appropriately horrified, but no amount of persistent questioning can persuade Pi to reveal the reasons for her suicide. Instead, the young woman makes an offer to the future survivors: to compensate for the painful gap her death will leave, she wants to grant a wish to everyone present. The excitement and incomprehension are great, but gradually friends and family members reveal to Pi their most secret desires. Here, at the latest, Lea Ruckpaul's text proves to be an evil parable of our achievement and competition society. Pi fulfills all the desires addressed to her, but in a way that is different from what is expected of her. This female Jesus is not an acquiescent sufferer who takes on the sins of the world, but a trickster who brings to light the greed and narcissism of everyone and thus holds up a mirror to society.
As an actress, author Lea Ruckpaul embodies radical and heartbreakingly combative characters on stage. Equally uncompromising, she, who can be seen in numerous roles at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, is now making her debut as a playwright.
