Ndayé Kouagou „Sorry, but your beloved mom is not always right!“

In the organizer's words:

In summer 2024, the Westfälischer Kunstverein will present the first institutional solo exhibition of the French artist Ndayé Kouagou (*1992, Montreuil) in Germany.

Ndayé Kouagou's various practices are always based on language, without there being a hierarchy between the resulting works. They range from the tangible form of a painting or boldly printed slogans, to videos that evoke the world of influencers, to the intimate and ephemeral nature of performances and workshops. As a self-taught artist, Kouagou looks at the sometimes exclusionary art world with different eyes and is driven in his work by the desire for dialog and openness.

In his video formats, Kouagou succeeds in imitating his own presence in space with the help of an avatar and its life-size projection on the surrounding walls. As in his performances, the artist deals with questions of power, the feeling of vulnerability, doubt and his own discomfort in the videos. A counterpart is addressed directly; commonalities emerge from confrontation and demarcation by recognizing intersubjective longings and deriving understanding and empathy for one another from this.
