Venice's famous sons
Antonio must have been a real fashionable name for a while. How else can it be explained that three Venetians named Antonio achieved world fame at almost the same time? Antonio Lotti, Antonio Caldara and Antonio Vivaldi, who is still famous today. Born and educated in the musical metropolis of the Baroque par excellence, the three composers developed into Venice's most important export hits. Greats such as Johann Sebastian Bach studied their works, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stole one or two musical figures for his own compositions.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Antonio Lotti was not only to bring Italian opera to Dresden at the beginning of the 18th century; as organist and later Kapellmeister of St. Mark's Cathedral, he was particularly adept at sacred works. His "Dixit Dominus" is magnificent with intricate contrapuntal chants and even jubilant choirs with trumpet fanfares. Antonio Vivaldi also created his "Magnificat" hymn of praise with great variety. Antonio Caldara's "Gloria", on the other hand, unfolds slowly like a sunrise. Restrained string preludes condense into glistening rays, and finally voices begin to celebrate the glory of God: "Gloria in excelsis Deo!".
