Neue Unübersichtlichkeit: Mode und Rechtsextremismus

Are there similarities between so-called hipsters, outdoor sports enthusiasts and supporters of the New Right? Yes, many of them wear the same fashion brands and have a similar style of dress. After all, bomber jackets and combat boots have long been out of fashion in right-wing extremist circles; instead, customization and covert codes are in.

The spectrum is broad and confusing, ranging from right-wing extremist fashion brands that add a certain (right-wing extremist) identifying mark to everyday clothing to the appropriation of globally known and popular brands for outdoor clothing. But why does the New Right avoid the symbolism of the past? What do the actors expect from this new confusion? And is it dangerous for society when right-wing extremists look like our neighbors?

Elke Gaugele, empirical cultural scientist and professor of fashions and styles, answers these questions and more in the SOCIETY ROOM. In her research, she focuses, among other things, on how fashion shapes identity and group affiliation and how the normalization of right-wing fashion is accompanied by a destigmatization of these groups. At GESELLSCHAFTSRAUM, she will be on hand to answer questions and clarify this confusing topic: How do you recognize right-wing extremists these days? And how can pop culture protect itself from this appropriation?
