Author Friedrich von Borries in conversation with architect Matthias Rottmann

At this event as part of the NEUVERORTUNG series, international experts will use examples to show how public space can be used to create new social and cultural relationships. The urban experience in the 21st century is becoming increasingly complex and autonomous.

Friedrich von Borries will be presenting his new book "Architecture in the Anthropocene - A Speculative Archaeology". He takes the perspective of future archaeologists who set out in search of the characteristic architectures of our time. They find meaningful objects primarily on the outskirts of cities. Waste incineration plants and server parks, multi-storey pigsties and seed vaults reveal more about our destructive way of producing and living than representative buildings in the centers. He dares to take a look at an architecture that no longer focuses solely on people and their needs. Friedrich von Borries is Professor of Design Theory and Curatorial Practice at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg.

Matthias Rottmann heads the Cologne planning office "De Zwarte Hond", which is working to change building practice and sees topics such as inclusivity, mixed use, sustainability, transformation and 'making' as trend-setting. He presents examples of "De Zwarte Hond", which are currently being shown at the current International Architecture Biennale "Nature of Hope" in Rotterdam. "De Zwarte Hond" has locations in Cologne, Rotterdam and Groningen; social commitment is a central concern.

The NEUVERORTUNG event series is a cooperation between the Cologne City Library and the House of Architecture Cologne (hdak), with the kind support of the Dutch Embassy / Consulate General Düsseldorf.
