Light scenes against the backdrop of war / by Natalka Vorozhbyt
Three women - grandmother, daughter and granddaughter - sit together over dinner in a cozy apartment in a European city. They talk about the shopping, the upcoming weekend trip and the youngest's schoolwork, as if they have always lived here. Yet they only moved into this house, where they are known as the Ukrainian "refugees", a few months ago. They describe themselves more as "temporarily displaced persons".
It seems almost unimaginable that the three of them had just stormed out of the house under a bomb scare or were stuck in a traffic jam at the gates of Europe, on their way to an uncertain future.
Natalka Vorozhbyt is one of the most important voices in Ukrainian drama and was already a guest at the Staatstheater in the 2022/23 season - with a reading in the Kakadu Bar. She also caused a stir in Germany with her plays Destroyed Streets and Green Corridors. In non-existent, she tells the story of three women from different generations in exile. They try to keep in touch with their homeland and at the same time adapt to their new surroundings. Seriousness and comedy go hand in hand in this play.
