The grande dame of European jazz singing Norma Winstone takes to the stage of the Sendesaal with the quintet The North: the singing legend from the United Kingdom brings with her a program of music by Canadian jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014), one of the greatest jazz composers of the last century.
The North, an international collective of musicians from Denmark, Finland/Sweden, Canada and England, celebrates the legacy of the pioneering jazz composer Kenny Wheeler. Wheeler's long-time collaborator and legendary British singer Norma Winstone is the group's outstanding artist. Winstone can be heard on numerous Wheeler recordings, including the iconic "Music for Large and Small Ensembles". Her trio Azimuth with pianist John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler was active for more than two decades and recorded several albums for the ECM label. Winstone's lyrics are a wonderful match for the melancholy of Wheeler's melodies, and her voice is inseparable from his music.
