ONLY LOVERS LEFT Margarete Jakschik und Friedrich Kunath

In the first joint exhibition by Margarete Jakschik and Friedrich Kunath, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf becomes a place of contemplation, reflection and melancholy. Under the title Only Lovers Left - an allusion to Jim Jarmusch's 2013 film Only Lovers Left Alive - the exhibition shows photographs, paintings and installations by the two artists. It focuses on both their different aesthetic positions and their similarities.

Kunath was born in Chemnitz and grew up in East Berlin, while Jakschik was born in Poland and moved to Germany at the age of six. Together, the couple emigrated west to Los Angeles in 2007. In their journeys inward and outward, Jakschik and Kunath draw on the legacy of German Romanticism, unraveling its conceptual irony and clichéd motifs of longing: solitary figures, dreamlike sunsets and winding paths are found in their melancholic compositions, combined with a distinctly American visual language and constant references to pop culture. In other words, romanticism is brought firmly into the present. The result moves between irony and sincerity, euphoria and melancholy. At their core, the familiar landscapes and everyday objects seem to harbor a longing for an irretrievable past, capturing the transience and timelessness of life with an attitude that is both playful and poetic.

The exhibition is curated by Gregor Jansen and Alicia Holthausen in close collaboration with Margarete Jakschik and Friedrich Kunath.
