Rural Massachusetts, 1991: Eleven-year-old Lacy spends the long summer at home, completely under the spell of her own imagination and the attention of her mother Janet. As the months pass, three mysterious visitors enter the orbit of mother and daughter. They are all fascinated by Janet and her enchanting ways. When Lacy is alone, she withdraws completely into her inner world, which is so rich in detail that it begins to seep into the outer world. In her film debut, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker observes how a child experiences the passing of time and shows the process by which a daughter becomes estranged from her mother.
