MUSIC THEATER
Theater am Goetheplatz
Operetta in two acts by Jacques Offenbach
Text by Hector Crémieux and Ludovic Halévy
In German language with German sur-text
Musical direction: William Kelley
Director: Frank Hilbrich
Everything is desolate in the eternally cloudless kingdom of heaven. Total abundance. Total weariness. This peace, this harmony, this life of luxury. The crowd of gods find it simply annoying, so they mutiny, rebel against sky father Jupiter and head for the shadow realm to hell ruler Pluto. There's supposed to be action there. After all, Pluto has just abducted Eurydice. Much to the delight of her husband Orpheus, who is fed up with women and marriage. But public opinion insists that Orpheus should immediately bring Eurydice back into the light of day. Directed by Frank Hilbrich (most recently Doctor Atomic, Don Carlos, Ariadne auf Naxos and Hello, Dolly!), the ensemble is joined by illustrious guests: for the first time on the stage of the Theater am Goetheplatz is TV icon Lilo Wanders as Juno, the mother of the gods. Long-standing ensemble member Karsten Küsters and musical and operetta director Helmut Baumann are celebrating a comeback, both taking turns in the role of Styx.
In her role as Public Opinion, singer Ulrike Mayer will give an introduction to the play in the foyer 30 minutes before the performance begins.
