Colonialism & Existentialism: So far from the people (2014)

About the movie:
1954: as a rebellion brews in the valley, two completely opposite men find themselves forced to flee together across the Algerian Atlas Mountains. In the middle of the freezing winter, Daru, a reclusive teacher, has to escort Mohamed, a farmer accused of murder. Pursued by horsemen and villagers who have sworn blood vengeance, they fight their way through the mountains to fight for their freedom together.

After the movie:
Following the film, philosopher Dr. Oliver Victor (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) will discuss with the audience what constitutes colonialism and existentialism and how Albert Camus, on whose story the film is based, relates to the topics. What constitutes human life? How free are we, what constraints are we subject to? Are we distant from people - and if so, from which people and from what?

It's about everything! Philosophy & Film
Watching exciting films and then philosophizing in the cinema? As part of the Philosophy & Film series, philosophers from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf give short keynote speeches after selected film screenings, in which they make interesting connections between the film shown and philosophical topics. Afterwards, the audience is invited to discuss with the experts in the movie theater. Four events are planned at the Bambi movie theater in Düsseldorf.
