Intimacy and relationships with artificial intelligence: Her (2014)

About the movie:
Her is set in Los Angeles in the near future: highly sensitive Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) makes a living writing touching personal letters for other people. His failed long-term relationship has left him heartbroken - making him all the more receptive to his new operating system, which is touted as an intuitive, independent personality. When Theodore starts up the system, he is charmed by "Samantha's" friendly voice (Scarlett Johansson) as she adjusts to him with understanding, sensitivity and amazing humor.

After the movie:
Following the film, philosopher Laura Hartmann-Wackers (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) will discuss with the audience what actually constitutes intimacy and relationships. Can we also build such relationships with artificial intelligence systems? Or are intimacy and relationships based on aspects that are only possible between humans?

Watching exciting films and then philosophizing in the cinema? As part of the Philosophy & Film series, philosophers from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf give short keynote speeches after selected film screenings, in which they make interesting connections between the film shown and philosophical topics. Afterwards, the audience is invited to discuss with the experts in the movie theater. Four events are planned at the Bambi movie theater in Düsseldorf.
