Plattform 3: fata morgana

In the organizer's words:

New at the Depot: Platform 3 - a presentation space for young photography

Numerous genres are represented at the Depot cultural venue. Cinema, theater, visual arts, markets, festivals - as a socio-cultural center in Dortmund's Nordstadt district, the Depot offers a wide range of events. The artistic profile of the building is also characterized by the genre of photography: The World Press Photo exhibition has been an annual guest in the Mittelhalle since 2012 and the Depot has been providing new impetus in the photography scene with the f² photo festival since 2017. Every two years, the festival brings together established photographers and up-and-coming young talent in a creative atmosphere.

Platform 3 in the rear third of the central hall now complements this focus and also offers the opportunity to get to know young photographers and their work beyond the larger exhibition and festival projects.

Whether discovered in passing or specifically targeted, Platform Three is an uncomplicated and easily accessible place to browse and explore. It bridges waiting times and creates connections in the exploration of contemporary photography.

The first project to be presented is Louis Roth's work "fata morgana"

fata morgana was photographed during three trips from 2023 to 2024 in Egypt's new capital, the New Administrative Capital. In his work, Louis Roth negotiates utopian vision with urban reality.

The NAC is a planned city that rises from the desert sands 50 km east of Cairo. Under construction are apartments for 6.5 million people, a large government district and enormous military complexes for the autocratic regime. While the ministries will have moved in by 2023, the rest of the city will remain largely deserted. Only the workers maintain the glass facades and the rose-lined streets. Given the high cost of housing, the question arises as to whether the city will be inhabited enough to justify the consumption of resources.

Supported by VG Bild-Kunst.

Louis Roth is a photographer from Berlin who studied at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie in Berlin. It was there that he defined his visual language, which is the result of a calmness that has been inherent in him since childhood and a pronounced visual understanding. He repeatedly works on external themes that reflect his inner self. He is interested in unexpected insights into different lifestyles, as well as the tension between reality and narrative inherent in photography. His latest project, fata morgana, has won international photography awards such as the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award and was featured in ZEIT magazine.
