"These boards don't mean the world. They belong to the world. These boards are for us to stand on. This is no other world than yours. They are no longer onlookers. They are the subject."
The auditorium remains bright that evening. The boundaries between real and acted time, between the ensemble and the audience merge. There is no plot, the text is a direct address to the audience. Even if the whole world is a stage - on this evening, the stage is the whole world.
Peter Handke's dramatic debut is both an anti-play and a cult play. A parody of and homage to the theater. A furious concert for four voices and a philosophical reflection on the relationship between stage and spectator. "Publikumsbeschimpfung" does not want to be theater and yet it is pure theater - timeless, bizarre, tragicomic, poetic.
