With the audiovisual collage "The Library of Babel", VickiBennett (aka People Like Us) takes usinto the depths and abysses of our media consumption culture.The workmergescountless media fragments from science, everyday life, entertainment, art, music and communication and refers to the phantasmagorical idea of a "complete, infinite library", as formulated by Jorge Luis Borges in his famous short story.The problem of managing vast amounts of information, navigating the thicket of texts, images and sounds and our attempts to find meaning within it all become central questions for Vicki Bennett in her recombination and reorientation of the material. Her digital collage narrative reconfigures what is already anchored in the collective consciousness of the audience in terms of associations and memories.The comprehensive mixing and transformation of the material goes far beyond this, however, and new, alternative narrative strandsunfold from the overlays and shiftsin fascinating transformation and complexity. Vicki Bennett/People Like Us became internationally known in the early 1990s for her Plunderphonics works and humorously satirizing media works.
