Rohstofflieferant, Erholungsraum, Politikum: Der Wald in der DDR

In the organizer's words:

Forests are not only indispensable for industrialized societies as a source of wood, a place of recreation and a regulator of the water balance, but have also become the focus of political action in recent years as a carbon sink and a haven of biological diversity. This diverse forest use represents a special historical case. In view of the long growth periods of the trees, this diversity of use repeatedly brings the actors involved into conflicts of interest that (must) be resolved politically and socially. A historical perspective is therefore particularly important in order to better understand and assess the conflict situations of the present. This special position opens up new perspectives on supposedly well-known epochs. The lecture will use the example of the GDR to shed light on the development of forest use in industrial societies and related conflicts in the second half of the 20th century, the consequences of which continue to have an impact to the present day. Despite undoubtedly existing peculiarities due to the political and economic system of the GDR, the similarities with forest use in other industrialized countries predominate in the longer term.
