Rollenbilder. Frauen in der Sammlung des MdbK

In the organizer's words:

Saint or Madonna, mother, muse or femme fatale: women play very different roles in the visual arts. As performing artists - especially in the pre-modern era - they rarely appear in museums. The MdbK is no exception. Why is this the case? And what characterizes a specifically female art practice? The exhibition looks for answers by focusing on the museum's own collection. It shows powerful representations of women in art as well as art by women - in all historical visual media: painting, hand drawings, prints and sculpture. From the pioneering "old masters" of the Baroque period to the artistic and social upheavals of the early 20th century. Freshly restored, many of these works are being shown to the public for the first time ever.
