With its ingratiatingly melancholy sound, the clarinet is the romantic among woodwind instruments and, thanks to its wide range, rich expressive spectrum and virtuoso possibilities, an all-rounder to boot. No wonder it experienced a veritable triumphal march in the 19th century and a large number of solo compositions were written especially for it. The Austrian master clarinettist Matthias Schorn shines in a prime example from the pen of Carl Maria von Weber, before the afternoon comes to a brilliant conclusion with the symphony by the equally brilliant clarinet mastermind Johannes Brahms.
