The Lenbachhaus is showing a joint exhibition by the artists Rosemarie Trockel (*1952 in Schwerte) and Thea Djordjadze (*1971 in Tbilisi). Djordjadze was Trockel's student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1998 to 2001, since when the two have maintained a close artistic relationship and have already realized numerous joint projects and exhibitions. In their practice, they explore a range of themes relevant to contemporary art. They examine the artistic working process and question its prerequisites, traditions, freedoms and limitations. They examine the boundaries of art as a concept as well as the exhibition space as a framework for representation.
In their exhibition at the Lenbachhaus, the artists explore the concept of beauty and the questioning of established aesthetic conventions along the lines of the poet Arthur Rimbaud. Rimbaud's introductory lines from "Une saison en enfer" (1873) provide meaning for the artists' approach: "One evening I sat beauty on my knee. And I found her bitter. And I insulted her."
