Musical themes are like short ideas reduced to a catchy formulation.
Variations, on the other hand, take up this theme, but they play with their mirroring, with ornate versions, with loud and quiet, they march and dance, they make a canon out of it or they shred everything to a pulp. But somehow we can still hear the theme from the shredded chaos...
Program:
J.S. Bach/Busoni - Chaconne in d
S. Rachmaninov - Corelli Variations
L.v. Beethoven - Sonata Op. 111
A young Dutchman plays this interplay of theme and variations on the grand piano with great virtuosity. He is completely "solo", i.e. alone on stage with the grand piano. Many people know Daan in Amsterdam, Hamburg and throughout the Netherlands as a fabulous accompanist for renowned singers. He has even performed in London's Wigmore Hall. Years ago he studied at the HfMT in Hamburg with Burkhard Kehring. (postgraduate studies in song accompaniment)
Daan is an extraordinary artist: full of depth, but also of an incredibly sparkling energy and he is sometimes very ethereally tender and sometimes hard, relentless, even diabolical colors.
Experiencing a pianist who really grabs you and takes you on different journeys in terms of themes and variations, across the history of music, explaining different musical styles, is a profound and fundamental experience.
